Electric Vehicle Repair and Maintenance
Some people like the idea of electric vehicles, whereas others are more reluctant to embrace it. EV technology is ever present in our society, and there is a growing need for technicians who can work with them.
Many mechanics undergo specialized training to handle unique aspects of EVs. This can include the maintenance and repair of their batteries.
Other services EV shops may provide include but are not limited to:
- Battery health diagnostics, replacement, and recycling
- Electric drivetrain repairs
- Software updates and diagnostics
- Cooling system and other battery maintenance
- Troubleshooting and repairs (particularly with electrical components)
- Regenerative braking systems
- Electric motor repairs
With specialized training and knowledge of EVs, many mechanics shops are able to work on gas cars and electric vehicles more seamlessly.
Efficient Diagnostics and Software Updates
Modern technology will allow for quicker and more accurate diagnostics. These new methods can save customers and shops time, money, and resources.
Software updates and remote monitoring play a significant role in preventative maintenance. They work using vehicle telematics which collect information generated by the vehicle and store it to monitor any need for repairs or upcoming maintenance.
Also reducing the need for lengthy or expensive diagnostics will be software updates. Even most hybrid vehicles will have software updates implemented. Thankfully, these updates are not lengthy, and they can improve a vehicle’s performance without it needing to be brought to the shop. When cars are taken in, highly-advanced screening components are likely to pinpoint a vehicle’s issues much quicker than traditional methods, and limit the waste of resources.
Alternative Fuel Types
Electric vehicles certainly fall into this category, but there are also some vehicles that are expected to be powered by CNG (compressed natural gas), hydrogen fuel cells, and biofuels. Each alternative fuel comes with its own care and maintenance, and mechanics who know how to work with these fuels could see more demand.
In addition, we can expect to see added green infrastructure to support vehicles with alternative fueling needs. A common example now is electric car charging stations in parking lots, or in gas stations.
Hybrid Vehicle Repair and Maintenance
Mechanics will also need to be well versed in servicing hybrid vehicles. While there are some mechanisms shared by hybrid and traditional vehicles, there are many other features requiring specialized knowledge specific to hybrids.
Some work that mechanics might perform on hybrid vehicles includes:
- Battery repair and maintenance
- Knowledge and repair of regenerative braking systems
- Inverter work
- Electrical and fuel systems
This list details some of the more distinctive jobs that mechanics working on hybrid vehicles might perform. As greener vehicles continue to be prioritized, it is more likely that mechanics will be trained in this technology. Their work can range from voltage electrical systems, managing complex battery diagnostics and replacement jobs, and the maintenance of internal combustion engines and electric drivetrains.
Increasingly Sustainable Practices
Some sustainability efforts may be put in place in garages, whereas others might be on the factory/manufacturing side. Some recycling programs for parts, oils, and related materials are beginning to be implemented in repair shops.
There also have been some biodegradable lubricants, coolants, and other fluids developed to reduce the odds of environmental contamination once products are disposed of.
Ethical and local sourcing is another initiative some manufacturers are beginning to prioritize. In terms of manufacturing, ethical sourcing refers to suppliers adhering to fair labor practices to obtain materials. This includes ensuring that no human exploitation or environmental harm occurs when materials are taken or produced. Local sourcing involves manufacturers obtaining parts and material from sources nearby, not only benefitting local economies, but also reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation efforts.
While these initiatives are ideal when considering sustainability in the auto industry, they are not industry wide practices in 2024. They do, however, point in the direction of a greener future for mechanics and automotive manufacturing.
