Take the First Step Toward Your Mechanic Career Now!

What You Learn In Mechanic School

As an auto mechanic, you’ll be expected to work on cars and trucks efficiently. You need to successfully inspect a vehicle, identify issues, and fix them properly.

In auto mechanic school, you’ll gain the necessary skills to do so and excel in your career.

Course Requirements

Some high schools have shop classes preparing you to perform the work you need to after graduation. However, most mechanics are still expected to complete a certified training program.

Your coursework will focus everything from the ignition system, to the suspension, to new technology and mechanics, and all the equipment from simple hand tools to the diagnostic software machines.

Classes will also include parts that are specific to manufacturers such as GM and BMW. Also, specialized courses like collision repair, painting, and structural analysis will be available.

Training

While in school, you will most likely have classroom training and lab training. In the classroom, you will learn in detail about cars, how all the systems of a car function, and what common problems you will encounter. In the lab, you will be able to put what you've learned into practice on cars and other vehicles. You may also have the opportunity for an externship or an apprenticeship with a mechanic shop. Training under an employer teaches you real-world, onsite skills that you don’t necessarily get inside a classroom. Your training period will generally last for a couple of months. You may work with lubricant workers, trainee techs, or auto helpers.

Certifications

It isn’t always necessary to become certified, but some students may decide to earn job-specific credentials through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Through the ASE, you can earn certificates in various specialties such as diesel engine diagnosis or damage analysis.

You need to have either two years of training or work experience to qualify for the ASE certification. To earn the certification, you need to pass the exam.

Become a Master Mechanic

To become a master mechanic, you need pass all the exams that the Automotive Service Excellence requires for each specialty. While it is hard work, having the knowledge it takes to pass the ASE, and the certification itself, can positively impact your career in the long run.

Use Education to Your Advantage

Doing more than the bare minimum distinguishes good mechanics from the best. While you learn plenty on the job and in school, employers almost always prefer to see certifications. You can take training at your own pace, and space out your ASE tests, as well.
